Profiles

Bob Muglia

Microsoft Corp.
Senior vice-president, Applications and Tools Group

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:
Muglia is in charge of the company's Office suite, which has about 90% market share, and its BackOffice server applications. Earlier, he was instrumental in creating Windows NT, the company's fast-rising network operating system.

EXPECTED TO TESTIFY:
Muglia was a late addition to Microsoft's witness list and is supposed to counter testimony from Charles Gosling, an government witness who will charge that Microsoft has misappropriated Sun Microsystem's Java programming language. Java allows software creators to write a program once to run on all kinds of computer systems. It is a threat to Microsoft's Windows, making it less important. Microsoft licensed Java in 1996, but Sun and the government argue that Microsoft has tried to subvert Java's purpose by creating incompatibilities with other versions of Java. Muglia will argue that Microsoft is living up to its Java license, which allows Microsoft to create a version of Java optimized for Windows.
