America Online Inc.
Senior vice-president, business affairs
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:
Dealmaker Colburn negotiated AOL's March 12, 1996, agreement to use Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser as part of its popular online service. In exchange, AOL snagged prominent placement of its icon on the top-selling Windows 95. Just a day earlier, Colburn had wrangled a similar deal to enable AOL to feature the Netscape Navigator browser -- but that fizzled in the face of what Microsoft offered.
Before joining AOL in September, 1995, Colburn ran the Silicon Valley practice of New York law firm Weil, Gotschal & Manges. At AOL, he oversees all operational deals, including those in the areas of electronic commerce, content, technology, and marketing. He favors cowboy boots and a flamboyant style.
EXPECTED TO TESTIFY:
Colburn will likely answer questions about Microsoft's attempts to get online-service companies and others to use Internet Explorer in exchange for prominent placement on the Windows 95 operating system.
