Microsoft Corp.
Vice-president, developer relations and Windows marketing
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:
Chase is in charge of operating systems marketing -- and is best known for orchestrating the high-profile and highly successful launch of Windows 95. He was the executive who directed marketing for Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser -- making deals with content providers like Disney and Warner Bros. and with Internet service providers like America Online and NetCom to get them to promote and distribute IE.
EXPECTED TO TESTIFY:
He'll talk about the agreements with ISPs and argue that they were not exclusive -- and therefore did not foreclose distribution opportunities for Netscape's rival browser. Watch for the government during cross-examination to grill Chase about Microsoft's deal to provide IE for America Online. The government says AOL was motivated by the importance of gaining a position on the Windows desktop interface rather than by technology advantages -- ergo, Microsoft was illegally trading on the power of its Windows monopoly to beat Netscape.
