Microsoft Corp.
Senior vice-president, personal and business systems group
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:
This hard-core computer scientist has risen steadily through the management ranks at Microsoft since he arrived from Banyan Systems Inc. nine years ago. He turned Microsoft's Windows NT network operating system into a force to be reckoned with in corporate accounts. Now he's in charge of all operating systems. His goal: To unify Microsoft's consumer and corporate operating systems on one basic technology.
EXPECTED TO TESTIFY:
Allchin will describe how and why Microsoft decided to incorporate Internet functions into Windows. He'll argue that it's impossible to remove Internet Explorer browser technologies from Windows 98 without degrading the operating system. And he'll point out that other operating system makers incorporate Internet technologies into their products. He may be vulnerable under cross-examination because the government has E-mails where he warns other Microsoft executives that Internet Explorer couldn't win the browser war against Netscape without taking advantage of Windows. The government believes that's a violation of antitrust law.
