Networking and Job Boards Voted Most Effective Way To Find A Job

Posted by: Lindsey Gerdes on May 04

Aftercollege.com, a job search site for recent grads, recently surveyed 670 college students and alums to get their thoughts on the job search. Not surprisingly, 78% were finding the job search process difficult, and a full 36% of respondents have started looking at jobs they wouldn’t normally consider.

The most effective tools in finding employment? Online job boards, company webistes, and speaking with someone at the company itself, say respondents.

And employers: Job seekers say the three best methods to contact them are through career sections on employer sites, school career fairs and job boards. (The results do seem a bit, well, convenient, considering Aftercollege is a job board itself.)

Surprisingly, social networking sites—which the majority of respondents use on the job search—were deemed the least effective resource in seeking employment.

What do you find to be the most effective job search tool? I would personally say networking.

Hi Lindsey,

The data came from surveying our users, so you'll definitely see job boards popping up as an effective source (because we added AfterCollege as an example). In hindsight, something we should have done and something that we will do in the next survey is distinguish between niche sites (like AfterCollege) and broad traditional sites (like Monster and CareerBuilder).

What's more convenient for us actually is the fact that people who had an easy time finding work chose faculty as an effective channel. More than being a platform that powers niche career networks, working through faculty and student groups to establish these career networks is the most unique aspect of our model.

Best,

A common complaint about job boards is the number of outdated, fake or scam jobs. The only job board that has solved this problem is www.LINKUP.com a job search engine that ONLY has jobs that are up on company career sites, their own internal career pages.

Networking is always a great tool to get yourself out there. I'm in Southern CA, and the best job board resource I've found for people looking for work in this area is called Jobing.com. The coolest thing is their Videos created for many hiring employers. If you search through the Videos or Blogs, you can also find career tips that are very helpful.

A new site launched last month, RealityUniversity, combines a traditional job board with social networking, yet unlike Facebook and others similar, there is no personal information. It allows companies, students and career centers to interact in a dynamic setting and the networking aspect combined with the branding and marketing opportunities allow a job seeker to create a 360 degree view of themselves to future employers.
