Burning Wood Is a Carbon Copout In "Carbon Trading" (Aug./Sept. 2007), the claim that Meister Cheese is reducing its carbon footprint by burning wood instead of natural gas is totally false. Because wood chips burn less efficiently than gas does, Meister Cheese is putting more carbon into the atmosphere, not less. Meister may be saving money, but his claim of social responsibility is off base because of the carbon dioxide and other wood smoke components, which create far more air pollution than natural gas. On the other hand, Meister deserves some credit (but not carbon credits) for using a locally grown, renewable resource instead of depleting the world's gas supply.
