Keeping Kids Safe Online Here are some Web sites that can offer teens and parents valuable tips for eluding cyber-predators One in five children is sexually solicited over the Internet, according to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. With today's fully wired and technology-savvy teens always a step ahead of parents and teachers, how do you make sure your kids are protected online? Here's a list of resources to help you out: Wired Safety www.wiredsafety.org An online safety and help group packed with resources for parents, educators, and kids. Make sure to check out the parent section, where you can download a PDF copy of "Parenting Online." HDOP: Help Delete Online Predators www.missingkids.com/adcouncil/ Publishes information on how to talk to your kids and how to report online predators. Also, it has a vocabulary list to help you decipher online shorthand like POS (parent over shoulder) and A/S/L? (age, sex, location?), as well as Internet safety quizzes for kids and parents. Cyber Tip Line www.cybertipline.com/ The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children's general information site. Katie's Place www.Katiesplace.org When Katie Tarbox was 13, she was molested by an older man she met over the Internet. Now 23, she has written a book for teens about her experience called A Girl's Life Online, and she keeps this Web site to help other young victims of sexual exploitation. Teen Angels www.teenangels.org A Wired Safety project, Teen Angels is a peer-education program for teens age 13-18.
