Suicide At The Country Club

"The inside job" (Fall, 2005) reminded me of my first job after finishing my MBA, at Ernst & Ernst in Detroit in 1971. On the day I started, they sent me out to a country club. The bookkeeper had committed suicide after the club manager had asked her about some checks that did not seem right to him. We did a fraud audit on the club and determined that she had stolen $15,000 over three years. The bill for our service was $20,000. You are absolutely right about too much control being given to one employee.
