International -- Corrections & Clarifications

"The Stars of Europe" (European Edition Cover Story, July 7, 2003)

In "The Stars of Europe" (European Edition Cover Story, July 7), our profile of Portuguese Finance Minister Manuela Ferreira Leite contained two errors: The value-added tax went from 17% to 19%, not from 15% to 17%. Also, the 2002 budget deficit was 2.6%, not the 3.7% we said in the story.

Also, because of a photo-service captioning error, our profile of entrepreneur Jesús de Polanco, chairman of Spain's Grupo Prisa, was accompanied by an incorrect photo. Here is the correct photograph.

"Give me some of that Indonesian debt" (Finance, June 16, 2003)

"Give me some of that Indonesian debt" (Finance, June 16) mischaracterized the current yield of $500 million in bonds issued earlier this year by Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. While total return for investors who bought bonds at issuance in January and sold them at the time of publication would have exceeded 14.3%, the current yield has consistently been below the issuance rate of 10.1%, reflecting a steady price appreciation in the bonds.
