DECEMBER
Chinese President Jiang Zemin visits Burma to strengthen close military ties. That same month, Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf visits Beijing twice to discuss the Afghanistan war.
JANUARY
Zhu visits India to build ties with China's traditional opponent and to help defuse India-Pakistan tensions. The same month, Jiang pledges $150 million in aid to Afghanistan, during the visit to Beijing of interim Afghan leader Hamid Karzai.
