Chip foundry UMC is cutting costs as fast as it can to counter a steep plunge in orders. The company has slashed capital expenditures almost 50% and cut staff bonuses. "We're still in winter, and there are no signs of spring," says Hsuan. But he believes UMC's technology will help it gut it out.
