WAP: Wireless application protocol, the current-generation mobile data technology that reformats Web pages to fit onto tiny wireless screens. Introduced in 1999, WAP services have been criticized for being slow and difficult to use.

2.5G: The next step in wireless data, set to launch this summer in Europe and next year in the U.S. The 2.5G systems send data separately from voice for delivery at least three times faster than current networks.

3G: Third-generation services let voice and data more efficiently share the airwaves and could be more than 10 times faster than 2.5G.
