Time With Amtrak

Posted by: Justin Bachman on September 06

I spent most of Friday on a train to upstate New York, six hours along the Hudson River through the Adirondack Mountains. New York City to Vermont is a one-hour flight, but it had been too long for me since sampling Amtrak. Regardless of one’s political views toward the taxpayer-unfriendly entity that is Amtrak, it’s satisfying to know we still have a national train system. Nothing like the rapid, futuristic service of Europe and Japan, but at least something.

I found it fine. But for those of us who rarely ride long-distance trains – wow!, talk about track turbulence. Even at lower speeds most of this journey was not smooth sailing. Pure coffee clutch time. If we had been flying, these shakes, rattles and rolls would have qualified, in pilot parlance, as “moderate chop,” the sort of conditions where a new altitude becomes not just a request but an imperative. Ugh. Not fun. However, no one else in our train car seemed similarly afflicted so it could have been a case where a blogger was being, as my girlfriend put it, “a whiny little girl.”

The whole train situation in this country is somewhat of a paradox.

The reason that Amtrak can't provide the quick and luxury service that is provided in other parts of the world is because nobody wants to take the train because it's faster to fly. Train companies are therefore worried about going broke--not getting faster, better trains.

But I believe that trains are ultimately part of the energy solution in this country, and need to be utilized. We need to build high speed coast-to-coast rail. But we can't ask the taxpayers to do that alone--people need to start to take a train whenever possible--I do, and it's not that bad.

Let's pick up the tab as taxpayers to do this project. We built highways and now we drive, we can build train tracks and take the train! I would love to take the train. I am based in Denver so we do have Amtrak service, the problem is it is basically makes no sense to take the train. Trip to Omaha $99 each way, flight, $75 each way, Gas to drive (Honda Civic) $75 each way) Now if I could hop on a high speed train that goes 200MPH and pay $75 I would rather do that, more enjoyable way to travel. Time is faster than driving, and same as flying with security lines, waiting for luggage, driving to an airport etc. I could sit at the on-train cafe, buy a beer and a sandwich, watch Nebraska fly by and be there. Let's pick up the tab as taxpayers to do this project, we built highways and now we drive, we can build train tracks and take the train!
