Super Spanish Rosé


I really don't know how they do it.

I mean, how is it possible to make beautiful wine like the new Wine of the Week, the Borsao Rosé 2010 from Spain, and sell it for only $8?

Quite amazing.

Especially when you consider what goes into getting the wine from grapes in a remote vineyard in Spain to the bottle on your table. The winemaker has to buy the land and grow the grapes, press them, ferment the juice, age it—even for a short while in a wine like this—put it in a bottle, insert a cork, and add a label. After all that, it has to be shipped to America and then to your wine shop.

There are also government regulations to be complied with, tax to be paid, and the importer, distributor, and retailer markups to be factored in.

Yet after all this, it costs a paltry $8.

The Borsao Rosé gives a whole new meaning to the term "value wine."

Pale salmon, almost orange in color, it has bright raspberry and strawberry aromas that combine delightfully with a zesty, mineral-infused finish.

And it's wonderfully food-friendly too, thanks to a crisp acidity. It will work with many summer foods but I especially enjoy it with pork in all its multiple forms—everything from salami to roast loin to Serrano ham to slow-cooked ribs, though it's probably not robust enough for spicy barbecue. I also found it perfect with hard cheeses like Manchego, Pecorino, and Roncal.

And all this reward for such a modest price. Like I said, amazing.
