2008 Toyota Sequoia

The available new 5.7-liter 32-valve DOHC V-8 pumps 381 hp and 401 lb-ft through a new electronically controlled six-speed automatic. Electronic throttle control, careful attention to internal friction and Dual Variable Valve Timing "with intelligence" (VVT-i, controlling both intake and exhaust valves) combine to enhance performance, efficiency and emissions. The six-speed has a Tow/Haul mode that extends use of its lower ratios and locks up in its top three gears to improve efficiency. Like the older five-speed coupled to the 4.7-liter V-8, it can be shifted sequentially via the floor-mounted shifter. The 4WD models have a two-speed transfer case - shifted electronically through an easy to reach rotary knob - containing a lockable Torsen limited-slip differential that transmits power to front and rear axles and can be locked with the push of a button.

The new, fully independent suspension employs upper and lower A-arms with coil springs, low-pressure gas-filled shocks and tubular anti-roll bars front and rear. An available Active Variable (rear air) Suspension (AVS) package has settings for comfort, normal, and sport modes. Despite its larger tires and wheels (18-inch alloys standard, 20-inchers optional) the new Sequoia's turning radius is a tight 39 feet. Brakes are large ventilated four-wheel discs with fade-resistant four-piston calipers in front.

A linebacker's SUV?

Did we mention that this thing is BIG? Not surprisingly, that's how it feels on the road...big, heavy, spacious, powerful (with the 5.7) and supremely quiet even at elevated speeds. Given all that road-hugging weight, it negotiates corners reasonably well, though not with the almost athletic (think NFL linebacker) feel of the new GM and even Ford big SUVs.

Steering is light but reasonably precise, and braking is solid and powerful even when towing a heavy load. And it's luxurious inside with all the big SUV bells and whistles, from copious cupholders and storage to available middle-row captain's chairs, premium audio, DVD rear entertainment, and a reclining/power folding 60/40 split third-row bench.

Three grades are available: standard SR5, mid-range Limited, and premium Platinum, each offering more standard goodies. Standard on the Platinum and available on the others are the 5.7-liter V-8 and six-speed automatic, 20-inch alloy wheels, rear load-leveling air suspension, a power back door, and a sunroof. Stand-alone options include 4WD, a tow package, heated leather seats, park assist, and (on Platinum only) laser cruise control.

We would also recommend the power-retractable side mirrors, the better to guide this big boy between trees off-road (as we did at one point) and slip it in your garage once home.
