Lite-On Technology

(TSEC: 2301)

Taiwan

With investors fleeing most Taiwanese tech stocks and share prices tumbling, Lite-On Technology is a local anomaly: Its stock price is actually up 3.6% for the year. One reason is investor confidence in Lite-On's expansion plans. In April, Lite-On gave Taiwanese rival BenQ Corp. $37 million and a minority stake in a Lite-On subsidiary for BenQ's disk-drive business. Now Lite-On is positioning itself as Japanese giants Sony and Toshiba battle it out to control the next generation of DVDs. The Taiwanese component maker is placing its bets on the Sony-backed Blu Ray standard and plans to launch its first Blu Ray drive this summer.
