Nextel Partners

(NasdaqNM: NXTP)

USA

Despite strong competition in the mobile telephone industry, Nextel Partners closed out the first quarter of 2006 with an additional 102,900 subscribers. This brought the Washington company's total to more than 2.1 million digital customers in 58 small to midsize markets, an increase of 25% over the same period last year. The company, spun-off from Nextel Communications, is expected to be bought back by the end of June by Sprint, which acquired Nextel Communications last year. Nextel Partners recently joined with Motorola to offer the first Windows Mobile-based Smartphone with Nextel digital walkie-talkie, the Motorola i930. The device gives customers immediate access to phone, e-mail, Internet and walkie-talkie services. These moves have translated into an increase in sales of 29% to $1.9 billion for the year ended May 31, with profits at $615 million and a solid return on equity of 63.1%.
