Agilent Technologies

(NYSE: A)

USA

Starting off as part of Hewlett-Packard, Agilent Technologies is now a thriving company in its own right. The company, which manufactures testing equipment, including scientific and electronic measurement products, also conducts its own research on new technologies. Agilent recently came up with the industry's first answer to the challenge of measuring Web TV's success. Its solution combines hundreds of channels, and several thousands of computer telephony and data-traffic streams to identify the true service quality experienced by subscribers, replacing the need for a variety of devices to test each aspect. Agilent recently spun off its semiconductor test business, now publicly listed as Verigy, and last year cut loose its semiconductor products group, now Avago. Looks like Agilent's drive to focus is paying off. The company saw a healthy return on stock of 45.3% and its share price increased by a solid 44.3% for the year ended May 31.
