Advanced Micro Devices
(NYSE: AMD)
USA
When AMD introduced its powerful but energy-sipping Opteron server chips and Athlon 64 PC chips in 2003, it caught rival chipmaker Intel napping. Since then, AMD has continued to gain market share against its giant competitor. The Sunnyvale (Calif.) company still holds the performance crown for many high-end microprocessors. That helped its sales jump 19%, in 2005, to $5.95 billion. In the same year, AMD spun off its money-losing memory chip business, helping deliver a 7.8% return on equity and a price-earnings ratio of 30.
