Wipro

(BSE: WIPRO)

India

Wipro Technologies seems to have ridden out last year's hard times, following the departure of charismatic former Chief Executive Vivek Paul last July. Since then, chairman and 82%-owner Azim Premji took over the reins and quickly reorganized the management. Premji increased the company's focus on more profitable and high-growth services such as infrastructure management and maintained Wipro's position as the world's largest independent research-and-development services provider. Premji's moves helped push revenues and profits up 30%. This year, a confident Premji has been on an acquisition spree, spending nearly $200 million on six European and U.S. companies, including Austria's R&D services boutique NewLogic, New Jersey's payment processor mPower, and Michigan's mechanical design services firm Quantech. Premji calls it his "string of pearls" strategy of acquiring niche boutique firms, and it's helping Wipro expand its global footprint.
