Hewlett-Packard

(NYSE: HPQ)

USA

Call it Hurd's Honeymoon. For years, the Silicon Valley giant struggled to find the synergies from its 2001 merger with Compaq Computer. But under new CEO Mark Hurd in 2006, HP reinforced its lead in printers and cranked up profits in PCs and high-end computers for the first time in years, even taking share from long-time nemesis Dell Inc. While sales grew only 7%, to $88.9 billion, Hurd managed to keep Wall Street focused on a big run-up in profits.
