Mediatek has successfully transformed itself. The Taiwanese chip design house is the world's leader in semiconductors for DVD players. But with that business maturing, the Hsinchu-based company has diversified into chips for handsets. In early 2005 they were just a small part of Mediatek's business but now account for about one-third of sales. Major customers include Korea's LG, Japan's Sony, and Taiwan's LiteOn. Sales grew 30% last year and profits increased 28%. Now Mediatek is targeting a new growth business: designing chipsets for digital TV. It's a promising market: According to Taiwanese investment bank KGI, the overall DTV semiconductor business was just $1.9 billion in 2004 but will top $9 billion by 2009.
