NII Holdings

(NasdaqNM: NIHD)

USA

NII Holdings is building a strong niche in the booming market for wireless phones in Latin America. Formally known as Nextel International, NII is aiming for the small- and midsize business market in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and Peru. Explosive growth in cell-phone demand has boosted sales by 40% since May, 2005, to $1.9 billion, and increased profits to nearly $195 million. Mobile-phone use in Latin America is still in its infancy, so the untapped market is huge. But NII is battling competition from two multinational carriers and a fistful of local competitors. While it is heavily promoting its Nextel-developed walkie-talkie service between Latin America and the U.S., NII may be hamstrung by another Nextel legacy: Its technology is incompatible with newer digital cellular services.
