Telenor

(OB: TEL)

Norway

Norway's largest telecom player, Telenor has fast become a major force across Eastern Europe and Asia in recent years with ownership stakes in a dozen cellular companies. Although Telenor is Norway's leading provider of fixed-line and television broadcast services, it is the company's mobile operations that are fueling its rapid growth. More than half of the company's 2005 revenues came from mobile. At the end of 2005, the 150-year-old company had nearly 83 million subscribers. The company bolstered its position in Scandinavia at the beginning of 2006 with the acquisition of Vodafone Sweden, the third-largest mobile player in the country. It is benefiting from the strong growth of its operations in Eastern Europe and Russia, which include wholly owned subsidiaries in Hungary and Montenegro and as well as stakes in Kyivstar, Ukraine's largest mobile operator, and Vimpelcom, Russia's second-biggest cellular company.
