Hon Hai Precision Ind.
(TSEC: 2317)
Taiwan
Taiwan's leading electronics company is focusing on what it does best: producing handsets, PCs, and all sorts of computer parts and components. Other Taiwanese electronics companies are trying to build brand names for consumer products, but Hon Hai is sticking to its traditional business, providing outsourced manufacturing for companies like Nokia and Apple. Hon Hai employs 130,000 workers in China and is shifting gears in the mainland: In early June, the company announced it was moving its Asia-Pacific headquarters to Beijing from the southern city of Shenzhen because it plans to expand production in northern China in order to grow business in neighboring Korea and Japan. On June 14, the company announced plans to sell $1.8 billion in shares overseas in order to pay for expansion. And the company is moving fast: On June 20, it revealed that that it is acquiring Premier Image Technology Corp., Taiwan's leading producer of digital still cameras, with Hon Hai paying $928 million in stock for the camera maker.
