America Movil
(NYSE: AMX)
Mexico
Latin America's leading wireless telephone provider turned in another stellar performance in 2005, thanks to solid growth in the region that boosted consumer spending, leading to a greater-than-expected expansion of wireless penetration. America Movil's customer base reached 100 million wireless subscribers at the end of March, a 50% increase over a year earlier, plus 2 million fixed-line clients. Because the company already had completed much of the investment needed to complete its regionwide rollout of GSM technology, net profits in 2005 surged by 85%, to $2.8 billion, on revenues of $16.1 billion. America Movil delivered a 37.4% return on equity and a total return to shareholders of 82.7%—and agreed to pay out the company's first-ever dividend. The Mexico City company controlled by billionaire Carlos Slim is closing acquisitions that will give it another 7.9 million wireless subscribers and 5 million fixed-line customers in the coming months.
