The Information Technology 100
China's biggest publicly traded maker of telecom equipment, ZTE is traded on the stock exchanges in Shenzhen and, as of December, 2004, Hong Kong. The company's Hong Kong IPO raised $400 million, and ZTE hopes to use some of the money to expand its business outside China.
Started in the mid-1980s as an offshoot of China's aerospace ministry, ZTE lately has had a lot of success in the developing world, selling CDMA equipment to operators in such places as Brazil, Egypt, Mongolia, and Russia. On June 7, China's official Xinhua news agency reported that ZTE plans to build a mobile-phone factory in Zambia. The company is expanding in wealthier countries, too. On June 3, the company announced the opening of its U.S. headquarters, in Dallas. And ZTE is still pushing hard in its home market. On June 7, it announced that it had joined forces with China Telecom, one of two state-owned operators of fixed-line networks, to build next-generation networks in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and other major Chinese cities.
