Turkcell Iletisim Hizmetleri

Turkcell, the only Turkish telecommunications company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, claims two-thirds of its homeland's mobile-phone market. Thanks to aggressive pricing and improvements in its voice and data services, the company notched a 23% increase in customers last year, to 23.4 million, boosting revenues by 44%, to $3.2 billion.

Now, with growth prospects in its home market slowing, Turkcell is widening its focus to neighboring countries. It is gaining ground in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Moldavia, and is negotiating to build a controversial network in Iran. In May 2005, Nordic telephone giant TeliaSonera, a major shareholder in Turkcell, made an unsuccessful bid to buy out the 40% stake held by Turkish conglomerate Çukurova Group.
