The Information Technology 100
When GSM wireless-services operator Mobile Telesystems was founded in 1993, mobile phones were a luxury practically unheard of in Russia. Even in 2000, when MTS celebrated its 1 million-subscriber milestone and became a joint-stock company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, just 2% of Russians owned cell phones. Today some 60% of Russians own them -- which explains why MTS, the leader with 34% of the market, is one of the fastest growing mobile-phone companies in the world.
A string of acquisitions have helped MTS expand from its Moscow base to the rest of Russia, as well as neighboring countries, including Ukraine, Belarus, and Uzbekistan. By mid-2005, MTS had more than 40 million subscribers, after recording 53% revenue growth in 2004.
