Spun off from Telefonos de Mexico in 2000, America Movil became Latin America's leading wireless telephone provider by pioneering prepaid phone cards and subsidized handsets in a region with limited disposable income. Today, it boasts 66.3 million wireless and 1.9 million fixed-line subscribers in nine countries. The Mexico City-based company controlled by magnate Carlos Slim snapped up fire-sale assets from early players such as AT&T, helping boost revenues 49% in 2004, to $11.9 billion. The company delivered a 21.8% return on equity while share prices climbed 62.5% in the 12 months ending May 31.
