Earnings: A Clearer Picture Emerges

Despite a dismal earnings story in 2007, S&P equity analysts are expecting results for the 1500 to recover in the second half of 2008, and post a 17.8% full-year increase as a result of easier comparisons, the expected benefit from a year's worth of Fed rate cuts (we think the benchmark Fed funds rate target will bottom at 2.5% by the second quarter), as well as a continuation of share buybacks from companies that still have a lot of cash on their books.
