AmEx Rises On Spin-Off Announcement
Tyco falls after missing first-quarter earnings estimates; Boston Scientific profit doubles; plus more of Tuesday's stocks in the news

American Express (AXP ) plans to pursue a spin-off to shareholders of its American Express Financial Advisors unit.


Walt Disney Co. (DIS ) posted better than expected 35 cents, vs. 33 cents first-quarter earnings per share on a 1.4% revenue rise.

Tyco (TYC ) posted 35 cents, vs. 34 cents first-quarter earnings per share from continuing operations (GAAP) on a 4.1% revenue rise. The company still sees $1.88 to $1.98 fiscal 2005 earnings per share, excluding charges related to divestitures or early retirement of debt.

Boston Scientific (BSX ) posted 49 cents, vs. 17 cents fourth-quarter earnings per share from operations on a 70% revenue rise.

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ ) to sell Centocor's U.S. and Canadian rights to its Retavase drug to ESP Pharma, Inc. Centocor, Inc. is a biopharmaceutical operating company of J&J.

Hospital-operator HCA (HCA ) posted 70 cents vs. 63 cents fourth-quarter earnings per share on 6.5% higher same-facility revenue and 6.1% higher total revenue. It raises its quarterly dividend 15%. The company says a fourth-quarter provision for doubtful accounts was $626 million, vs. third quarter's $688 million.

Avon (AVP ) posted 61 cents, vs. 55 cents fourth-quarter earnings per share on a 10% sales rise. The company sees 35 cents first-quarter earnings per share and $1.95 to $2.00 2005 earnings per share. It raises its quarterly dividend 18% and sets a $1 billion stock buyback.

St. Paul Travelers (STA ) posted 44 cents, vs. $1.09 fourth-quarter earnings per share despite a 52% rise in net written premiums. The company is to explore strategic alternatives to divest its 79% equity stake in Nuveen Investments and combine its major insurance pools.

MGM Mirage (MGG ) posted 47 cents, vs. 62 cents fourth-quarter earnings per share as one-time items offset an 11% revenue rise. The company believes the current first-quarter earnings per share consensus of 74 cents is reasonable.

Aflac (AFL ) posted 81 cents, vs. 14 cents fourth-quarter earnings per share on a 21% revenue rise. The company raises its quarterly dividend 16%.

Ariba (ARBA ) posted 16 cents first-quarter loss, vs. 13 cents earnings per share as charges, higher costs, and expenses offset a 65% revenue rise.

American Standard (ASD ) posted better-than-expected 46 cents, vs. 38 cents fourth-quarter earnings per share on an 11% revenue rise. The company initiates a 15 cents quarterly dividend and sets a $400 million stock buyback. It sees $2.60 to $2.75 2005 earnings per share (excluding a stock option expense) on a 6% to 7% sales growth.

SRA International (SRX ) posted 52 cents, vs. 33 cents second-quarter earnings per share on a 32% revenue rise. It sees 48 cents to 50 cents third-quarter earnings per share, 50 cents to 52 cents fourth-quarter, and $1.95 to $1.99 fiscal 2005 earnings per share.

Internet Security (ISSX ) posted 19 cents, vs. 9 cents fourth-quarter GAAP earnings per share on a 20% revenue rise. It sees $75 million to $79 million in first-quarter revenue and 14 cents to 17 cents GAAP earnings per share. It sees $325 million to $335 million in 2005 revenue and 69 cents to 75 cents GAAP earnings per share.

Altiris (ATRS ) posted a lower-than-expected 23 cents, vs. 16 cents fourth-quarter earnings per share on a 60% revenue rise.
