MetroPCS IPO looks hot

Posted by: Aaron Pressman on January 04, 2007

Over at IPOHome.com, they’ve noted the first company IPO filing for 2007 and it looks like a dandy. Cellular operator MetroPCS Communications wants to raise $1.1 billion to expand its unusual mobile phone offerings after winning a whole bag of new licenses at the most recent Federal Communications Commission spectrum auction. Telecom was a hot area in the stock market in 2006, putting the MetroPCS deal in good position for going public and getting some first-day pop.

MetroPCS, based in Texas, has grown like a weed with a service that gives many consumers exactly what they want, a simple flat-rate for all monthly calls, minus what they don't, a lengthy contract with an onerous termination fee. With coverage in just a few areas of the country, particularly Miami, Atlanta and San Francisco, the company has 2.6 million customers, more than double what it had two years earlier.

And its coverage is rapidly expanding. At the end of September, the company had licenses to offer service to areas where 65 million people live. Service was live in areas where 36 million live. Since then, the company went live in November in northern florida and by mid-year will add service in Los Angeles. That will push the number of people in its service area to 53 million within 2 years, the company says. None of that even includes the licenses just bought which cover the east coast from Philadelphia to Boston, San Diego, Seattle and Las Vegas, among other locales.

Revenue in the first nine months of 2006 hit $1.09 billion, exceeding the company's revenue for all of 2005 and more than double what it collected in 2003. Net income has not followed the same path, but for reasons investors appreciate. MetroPCS took on a lot of debt to fund the purchase of more spectrum and its interest expense of $67 million in the first nine months of 2006 is triple what it paid two years earlier.

You'll have to wait and see on the valuation, however. None is included in the initial filing. There is at least one good comp, as Leap Wireless (Symbol: LEAP) has a similar model and its shares gained 58% last year. So be sure to dial in for more details when the company files its expected pricing range in coming weeks.

I'M from Miami fl, I have metro since 03'I was one of the first metro users in dade county; I would love to invest in this company. Do you know when metro is going to become public? and how much will be a share?

I would look at their SEC filing a little closer.
Their whole business model is flawed. It assumes they either pay little or nothing to terminate calls on other carriers. They are being sued by a carrier in front of the FCC for refusing to pay for the calls. Do you really think that Verizon and AT&T want to terminate all those calls for free. Especially since there is Verizon Wireless and Cingular/AT&T. Why else do you think all the other wireless carriers don't offer unlimited calling!
The FCC is looking at intercarrier compensation for all carriers. If it doesn't go the the way MetroPCS wants (which I doubt it will), I could see MetroPCS going bankrupt. Didn't they go bankrupt once before? Their network doesn't sound very good and they have poor coverage in the areas they serve. Beware of MetroPCS.

Yes, thy did go bankrupt, but under legitimate circumstances.

That is not the problem...The FCC, SEC and the IRS will find out. It is only a matter of time. The business model is not the problem, the officers are.

There coverage is the same, almost better than cingular here. And how could I complain when I am getting unlimited internet (not restricted at all). unlimited text/pic msging. unlimited long distance. unlimited local. all for $49 a month. with no contract or deposit. try doing that with cingular...

Looks likes Metro Pcs is making a lot of companies mad. Soon all carriers will have to change to unlimited calling. Can't wait till they go IPO.

Can you give me the stock symbol for Metro PCS and any additional information on the history of this company?

March 21, 2007 01:47 PM

Same here I would really consider investing in this companies IPO.

Bob sounds like a Cingular employee. How can you beat unlimited Local, Long Distance and Text Messaging for 50$?

I had a Cingular phone, used it as much as I use my Metro and my bills were around 3-400$ =( Blehhhh forget about Cingular they will pinch anywhere they can. Once more and more people see the benefits of MetroPCS and carries that give the same thing they will switch.

Metro will in return beef up thier Towers and phone services and so what if a call gets dropped, call back for free or let them call you back for free if the conversation is that important or send them unlimited text messages.

40,000+ minutes in a month and guess what I can use all of em for only 50$ sux for youCingular and Verizon users, oh I forgot you enjoy the mobile net and those features.... Well I have a life outside of my cell phone, I guess I am different.

Hey, I am raising couple of teenagers...the family plans at the blood sucking cingular, t-mobile would not work even for Bill Gates. I believe the world CEOs carry MetroPcs. (PS: not for free...no additional slick fees)

I have always wondered where Metro PCS was headed. Will they continue on the very slow path they've started? My big question is WHEN will they get new phones? They keep releasing Motorola phones in different colors..BLAHH..I'd like to see a variety.

This is going to be a Mastercard Level IPO. All the funds are making sure this stays out of the wire. Its going to go nuts tomorrow, its the biggest IPO of the year and no one is covering it?!? Reminds me of the Mastercard IPO. They went public with no fanfare, as soon as everyone realized they went out, the stock went nuts. If you still can, buy at the IPO price. This is going to be huge.

I wouldn't start telling people that MetroPcs is hot, not with their customer service. Anyone buying their stock is just putting their money in loss basket. It's that simple and it would be soon evident for everyone to see.

I recently got Metro for my teenage son because he was killing me finacially under Cingular's family plan. I had to constantly worry about the bill. Now he can use it until his tongue drops off and I'm not stressing over it. One month under cingular I had to pay $50 for just text messaging because he couldn't keep track. I'm even thinking of getting Metro and keeping Cingular on the side for trips to areas which Metro doesn't cover. With this expansion they are definetly going the right way and the competition can't hurt the consumers.

As a MetroPCS customer for several years in Atlanta, and a avid watcher of their business (I too am not so patiently waiting for them to finally offer a decent phone to go along with their unlimited internet plan) I can say from my personal experience, and including those who I have referenced to the company, that their service is stable, their customer service is reliable and helpful, and they are getting better at doing the little things.

I would have to be suspicious about just who it is behind the nicknames that are posting all of the bad info about this company, because I haven't seen any factorial information to back up their statements.

But, I do agree STRONGLY that MetroPCS would do exponentially better if they had a better selection of phones to support businesses. I suspect if they offered PDA Phones like Blackberries that my whole company might switch to them because of what a great value their service is.. and with businesses as clientel their stocks, and business, will be booming.

Metro PCS are booming in Central Florida (the Orlando area) I am also thinking about going with Metro PCS. I currently have Nextel, but the rates and everything they are getting nickels and dimes for are absolutely ridiculous! Metro PCS are working very diligently in placing towers to cover more areas in the surrounding areas in Florida which is making service more convenient.

I have had Metro for a little over a year, and absoutly love it. I have upgraded my phone a few times, when they finally come out with a better phone, but what the heck, im paying $50 a month for everything. No worries ever. I barely ever have dropped calls. I think its more the phone you have than the service. Really how often do most of us travel from a two or three county area. When I do its usually for vacation and I really dont want to be reached anyway. What happened to the good ole days?

Metro PCS: Good or bad? Unlimited nights and weekends are great. Long overdue and they are reaping the benefits as customers flock to change to their service. However their customer service is horrendous. When they cannot activate a phone to an existing account they take 7 to 10 business days (in reality two weeks) to refund a credit card deduction that has taken them seconds to deduct. But when you call to ask why it is still not refunded you are told that you have to cancel your active account before the refund can be applied. A horrendous way to do business and no-one in customer service at any level will help in any way except to repeat ad nauseum their 'policy'. How can you possibly owe them for a service that was never activated? If they do not amend and alter customer service and policy they will not survive.

metro is great, every thing, it got better 100% since it started, drop calls are things of the past, I had been with every phone company out in south florida and metro is far the best, the only thing that I will love from metro are pda and more variates of phone, the best nokia's or even an Iphone, hey why not? p.s. its true that motorola phone can't not be charge for more than 3 hours and can't be chage till the battery is fully discharge, its that true?

I recommend metro pcs every chance i get. My bill is $50.00 a month every month I don't have to wory what time it is or if I have Minutes left.I don't have to hurry people off the phone. I was a former Nextel customer and before I swithched I wasn't checking minutes and I assumed that if I went over $75.00 they would cut off my service like They usually do. well they didn't and I was roaming which also I didn't know. My phone bill came out to $547.00. and they would not adjust anything. sO HMMM $547.00 OR $50.00. i REST MT CASE/THANK YOU

After reading all the comments about MetroPCS, I have to add my own. Since the 3 month period of having this service, the only thing that dissapoints me is that their customer service is horrible. I love everythint else about the service, especially my ability to have cell phone service that I don't need a credit check or deposit to get. Before I got this service, I used to have to have minute phones which were the pits because of my credit history. Not only that, but when I had a T-mobile phone and an AT&T phone, the would always put these extra charges on my phone and it got to the point where I was fed up with their service. Now I am finally free to talk as much as I want and don't have to suffer for it. ONE FLAT RATE!!!! Thank God that this company made this bold move, because eventually, I was going to try to start my own company.

I hope that MetroPCS stays in business for a long, long time. They have given people like me who couldn't have AT&T/Cingular, Verizon Wireless, or Sprint service mainly because of credit, hope! Metro---keep hope alive!!!!!!!!

Fu** metro pcs i have nextel an im happy with the rates i have 1,350 min's unlimited free incomeing calls free nights and weekends starting at 7:00pm and unlimited texting for 89 dallors a month and i dont have to worry about dropping alot of calls i have service every where i go. so think smart which is better in the long run contract nextel or verizon NOT cingular or them other wireless compines so once again think smart and go with something thats going to help you and not something thats going to let you down when you need it like metro pcs. Example( if you where dieing with a heart attack how would u talk to the help when you service is cutting out)

Metro is starting the infancy of what will grow to be the largest logical provider of phone service in NorthAmerica then the UK. I just bought the Krazr phone, this is the top of the line mobile phone on the market. As a mortgage banker I have clients all over the country. With this phone and web email I have access to my files and clients from the beach or ocean. I sit and wonder about all the people slaving away in their offices day by day doing nothing and making no money I work 3 hrs a day and make 320k a year. my business phone cost are 54 dollars a month. Great product.

I'm a 5year MetroPCS customer and I have good things to say about them.
More people stay in their local area than travel out of town or on long trips. MetroPCS fits these people (and me) perfectly because they DO NOT NEED ROAMING. My coverage is great. I am a consultant, and I'm all over Atlanta and the surrounding cities. My phone works flawlessly.
I also have a Verizon Treo that I am reducing to just data service because I don't need voice ( It cost too much from Verizon).
I put it to you that if more people actually thought about what they need as opposed to having a "cool" phone, they would go with MetroPCS.

I love my Metro Phone, I don't know how they do it, but keep up the good work.

Other phones especially Sprint rob you blind, as do many other cell phone companies.

for Linnybb@hotmail.com I live in Naples, FL, but I do not get reception on Hwy 858, Hwy 29 and parts of US 41 by Everglades City. I hope that the new Ava Maria college and the new town of Big Cypress Town will cause additional services to include these areas as well.

Metro PCS a Great Company!!! Customer service Needs some help but for $50 a month i will wait for them to pick up the phone , Cingular/ATT or whatever they are called now, Verizon , Tmobile . I am so sick of those companys chagering for every little thing , There rates are insane no one can afford that!!! The bottom line is there is no reason to make these other companies to get rich when we can show them we are just sick of there kind of buisness. So everyone just close your accounts and switch to Metro PCS , PS Hey metro Fix customer service and i have no complaints are all .

I just relocated to Atlanta, Ga from Miami Florida. I am a Nextel customer (soon to be Metro PCS), the sad part about being with a company that have been out way before Metro PCS, is that it does not work in my apartment. I had to use my next door neighbors's phone and he told me he has metro. I was like thats crazy. I pay nextel $90.00 a month and mind you my plan is $49.99 for 300 min unlimited nights and weekend free incoming calls. I have to pay extra for text message, pic message, and so on. I was hesitant on getting metro so I transfered my service over to sprint thinking that would work. It only got worst. My phone says searching for service in my apartment. Now for those of you who are bashing Metro appreciate it for now, because you will recruit over to it soon. I don't see them going anywhere for a long time, and if they do, then at least I know I jumped on the bang wagon, instead of wasting more money to companies like Nextel/ Sprint who by the way has bad customer service too. Like SIV3L said on March 21/07. I to have a life outside of my cell phone.

METRO RULES !!!!!

October 4, 2007 06:08 PM

i think metro pcs should take over or parter with leap. imagine!!! if they get together and it becomes one of the top carriers like verizon or nextel then ALL those companies are going to flex a little bit or a ton maybe to push them to unlimited minutes to compete!!! GO METRO PCS!!!!! the contract and credit check is buLL!!! WHY ARE YOU GOING TO SHOW ANY SOCIAL OR PRIVATE information to sprint or what ever if it's not like your going to buy a house. i mean let them check your Privay maybe if you buy a car and i repeat MAYBE LET THEm but for a phone HAHAHAHA it's just a phone.. of course i didnt realize that untill my phone bill for Cingu*ar was $400 DOLLARS!! SWITCH TO METRO PCS!!!
THERE THE FUTURE!!!!! and in STOCk TO!!!

Metro PCS is by far the best carrier out there for the money. All of the above comments would highlight this fact without repeating them again. We need to stop buying the brand names like Sprint/Nextel, Cingualr/AT&T and others and paying so much money. It is abundantly clear that these other carriers are scared to death and spending millions and millions of dollars to try and distort the truth and make you pay for the advertising with these high rates. Metro PCS is the next Walmart or Home Depot if you will. The unique no contract and unlimited services with paperless bills is ready for the hostile market place. I am a long term investor and I use Metro PCS phones. If you try Metro PCS you will also be a beleiver.

i have metroPCS and i like it but i dont like that whenever i leave my area i wont have a phone.it takes metro forever just to add more service areas. it sucks! but i must say...out of all the providers ive had it has to be the best..verizon has great service and phones but i cant even get unlimited texts with them.and it costs 20 extra dollars for 5000 which might sound like alot but it goes by fast. and Tmobile also has good phones and works all over the country for no extra charge but service wasnt much better than metro.so i have to say...stick with metro they might just become a lead carrier and you dont want to be stuck in a contract when they do.

I lived in California and my wireless was Metro PCS. There is no other wireless company like it. Dependable, saves money, excellent customer service reps. I moved east to the Maryland are and pray everyday for Metro PCS. Not only was the service outstanding, but, the phones were great also. You even got your first month free and not all of these damn add ons that the wireless companies here make you pay for. What's the use of havinbg a picture phone when you even use it unless you pay for internet. METRO PCS YOU ARE THE GREATEST CAN'T WAIT FOR YOU TO OPEN IN THE MARYLAND AREA I'LL KNOCK THE DOORS DOWN TRYING TO BE THE FIRST ONE IN. If you haven;t tried Metro PCS don't open your your mouth. Try it! You'll love and I do mean love it. Please open in Maryland so like today>>

I have been a Metro PCS customer for about 4 years now. I pay $45 a month plus tax and fees for a total of $52 a month. I LOVE having unlimited minutes and unlimited text messaging. I got rid of my home phone when I got my first Metro PCS phone so I use my cell phone exclusively. I talk an average of 6000 minutes a month and send and receive around 3000 text messages a month! I NEVER have to worry about how much I'm using my phone because my bill will NEVER be more than $52 a month. Can you imagine how much I would be paying with another carrier for that many minutes and for that many messages?
Well, let me tell you a little story....

When I first got my Metro PCS phone 4 years ago, I had a friend named Bruce and we talked on the phone ALL the time. I never worried about how many minutes I was talking and Bruce said he didn't have to worry because he thought he had plenty of minutes. He was with Sprint or Cingular and had around 1,500 minutes a month and he thought that gave him a lot of talk time. About a month went by and we had been talking on the phone and text messaging all the time, and when he got his phone bill it was $800.00!!! I thought he was gonna have a nervous breakdown or a heart attack! Well, he made sure he would NEVER get another phone bill like that again...he switched to Metro PCS too!

I also use my Metro PCS phone for international long distance and they have very good rates. For example, it only costs me $0.13 a minute to call Costa Rica.

The only time I have ever have a problem with Metro PCS is when I have tried to call their Customer Service Department. Quite frankly, it sucks! They are nice, but it takes them FOREVER to answer the phone. On the other hand, I hardly ever need to call them because I can pay my bill each month using my cell phone or I can pay my bill online using the Metro PCS website and I never have a question about my bill because it's always the same, $52 a month.

Coverage is good, talk quality is good, and I only have a problem with a call dropping about once or twice a month. Big woop! On a scale of 1 - 10, I would give Metro PCS an 8.5 or 9 and I would definately recommend Metro PCS to anyone who just wants to talk on the phone and send text messages without having to worry about their monthly cell phone bill.

Oh, one more thing, you can now add additional lines to your Metro PCS account for only $20 a month and those have unlimited minutes and unlimited text messaging too!

I rarely use my MetroPCS phone, but after perusing a T-Mobile contract, I swore I'd never agree to such an abomination. The sense of freedom I feel, knowing I can call anywhere in 48 states without giving a thought to minutes, penalties, or incomprehensible clauses is worth a fortune. What the company has discovered, that most people don't spend all their time on the phone, even when given free rein, will likely revolutionize the whole legal-contract paradigm.

MetroPCS is the way to go. Soon they'll be all over the world, which means, you will be able to take your MetroPCS phone with you where ever you go. Talk all you want for one low price.
Who wants to watch minutes and only talk free on the weekend and after 9pm. That's crazy! These other phone services offer a certain amount of anytime minutes, which are used up quickly. MetroPCS offers forverver minutes which last a lifetime.

Guys get with the program!
I know for a fact that ATT after or prior merger with Cingular they had an Unlimited calling plan that is 99 a month. Recently Verizon is doing a limited marketing to target new customers with similar 99 a month offer. too bad it cannot be mixed with share family plan.
So check your facts????

I've been with Metro PCS for two years. At first I thought it was a mistake switching from T-Mobile because of all the dropped calls. It has gotten way better. I rarely have a dropped call. You just can't beat their price plans!

Cons:

Customer service does need a LOT of work. Its mainly because of the automated system... it makes it soooo hard to talk to a live person... When I did reach a live rep. he said to ask the automated system for activations everytime you call and you can get straight through.

2: Their insurance policy is a waste of money. If something happens to your phone its an $85.00 deductible. Then you have to send a claim in and they will MAIL you the exact same phone... to me, that is just unacceptable!!! Who wants to wait for anther phone in the mail?

3: There phone choices are just not that great! Right now I have the Nokia 6265i, which I love. It does EVERYTHING! They have yet to come out with a phone that is even half way comparable in my opinion! Iw ould like to upgrade, but... when I take a look at they have compared to my phone, its a DOWNGRADE!

4: Roaming: When I visit my fiance in Virginia, no coverage... butI can use travel talk to roam; however its a bit pricey!

Overall though, I still love my metro pcs... if they work on improving the above and their coverage area... they would seriously be a force to be reckoned with... they would run everybody else out of business!

Ok lets face it everyone with so many corporations out outsourcing customer service to places like India most Americans are used to very bad hence "hard to understand what they are saying" customer service.

So I think all we care about when it comes down to it is the "cost". Think about it if you don't like metro PCS just end the service and you have nothing at all to worry about. It a bit of a no brainier or you could stay with lets say Cingular or Sprint and get great customer service right away but end up having to beg them for a refund on dropped calls. Or a refund on overage for hours of wasted time "OUR WASTED TIME".

So in my eyes what is better great customer service? Or having more time to do other things in your life more important then talking to someone from India for an hr. I think we all know the answer to this one.

I will leave you with these last words "why drive an hour to the next gas station for 5 cent cheaper a gallon gas when it will end up costing you 5 cents more to fill up the wasted gas you just used on driving your car to get 5 cents a gallon cheaper gas. Now this is what I call insanity. LOL

Forgot one thing! How other mobile companies have ruin peoples credit for overage minutes, in the 100s and 1000s of dollars per person, with Metro PCS that will never happen. Wake Up people to reality, KIDS! run up the minutes! METRO is the way to go.

I've had Metro for just shy of a year. At the time I made a bad choice on picking the Strobe for a phone. I was at a Metro store paying a bill and mentioned that my phone was shutting off randomly. They told me it was a design flaw, and I could go to a corp store and get a different phone. I really like the warranty exchange phone they gave me for just $11. I've really had an interest in opening a few Metro stores in my area (Oviedo, FL) & have found a great location very close to my house, please advise me "MetroPCS Inc". Now more then ever,I would love to hear from one of your reps, since they now have "push to talk" or "walkie-talkie", that can, "from what I've heard" "talk with ALL the other push to talk services on the market.... That alone would make it easy as pie for even a 12yr old to sell the service all day long!, lol Granted, yes I do agree, they're not perfect, but they're getting there, & will get there. lol Your a fool if you don't have this service, just go into one of their store s and take a GOOD look at the map on the wall or counter. There are dots everywhere, showing future planed expansion; so what does this mean class....? Things can only get better! ;-) As I've noticed with my signal while at home...

i love at&t,they are the best out there better, way better than metropcs is like comparing a corvette(at&t) to a bike(metropc). i have at&t now and am very happy. I had metropieaceashit before it had to go like a bad habit. AT&T is pretty expensive but if you want something good u have to pay big bucks.SHALOM!!!!!!!

Metro PCS is the worst. I would never invest, buy, purchase, be positive or do anything to let anyone think that this crummy company is anything but the worst provider in the world. Metro PCS has the worst network ever. I was in a crunch so I purchased them 2 months ago. I regret it so much and I'm going to go back to my previous provider. I get so many dropped calls. The service always goes out. It's embarrassing to see all these calls get dropped. It's completely unprofessional. Everyone I've spoken with hates the service. I don't know anyone that has this service that says anything positive about it. It's too bad you can't get a good quality network company that's inexpensive. I guess you get what you pay for, but Metro PCS isn't worth paying $5 a month much less $50/month. They really do suck.

Why won't my phone work in other Metro PCS areas within my state even though they are Metro PCS areas? My phones don't work outside of my city even though Metro PCS added new regions Bay City, Flint, Saginaw, Lansing and Midland. Now I am told I need to upgrade (purchase) new phones even though my phones are barely 6 months old. Shouldn't the phone work in any area where Metro PCS has towers?

I left Metro PCS 3 years ago for Sprint. It's one of the worst decisions that
I've ever made in my life. Sprint is dishonest and has the worst customer service and billing department on the planet. Metro has PDA's now.I'm going back this week.

Metro PCS is the best thing going. I bet that you whiners didn't know the Bill Gates is part owner of the company. He must know something that you don't know.

Sorry Bob...but it sounds to me like you have an "agenda". MetroPCS has won awards for their customer service and service in general. Metro right now is one of the only wireless co. with any new site activity. Maybe at the on-set the coverage was sketchy..no wireless carrier is perfect..but Metro is exceeding.
