Check out this mesmerizing film short about an artist who works by etching away grime from public surfaces. In the way a painter daubs pigment on a canvas to build up an image, Paul Curtis uses a range of power washers and organic cleaners to carefully erase dark road grime from walls. He leaves behind evocative shadow shapes, nearly white forms — trees hills and plants — that pop out from the black background of grime left behind. Prosaic as it may seem, the contrast between clean and dirty wall is surprisingly powerful, exposing the inured public to a reminder of just how much pollution — mostly from vehicles in this case— is building up in our world.
