Mundane Consumer Quandries: Biobags

Posted by: Heather Green on August 22, 2007

I hate plastic bags as much as anyone. But standing in line last night at the pet store, I was reminded of just how confusing trying to be green is.

Clutching my kitty scratch post, which claimed that it was “natural and recyclable” I looked to the right and saw an entire display for biodegradable doggie poop bags. Immediately, my mind went through its flip flops. Oh, that’s great that Petco is selling these. Oh, do people realize that being biodegradable means nothing if you throw them into landfills that aren’t turned. And how would people know that?

This morning, I checked out the BioBags site and they state all this on their site for people willing to take a look. (Though it gives you no sense of how many communities actually have open air or turned landfills. My guess is not a lot.)

My bigger question is how many people actually take the first step to look up this kind of information? Most people are going to think tha biodegradable is biodegradable and not look much fuller. The point is we're enterting a whole new world of norms and just as it took people time for folks to learn the habits of the old world, it will take a lot of time for them to learn these.
