Life at the end of the 20th century may seem frenzied, but most people spend less time on the job than their counterparts did 30, 50, or 100 years ago. And once they are home, they don't need to wear themselves out cleaning or cooking, thanks to the dozens of appliances and devices that save time and effort. With each passing decade, new technologies, new games, new pastimes, and new gizmos have appeared to assist and amuse us in our homes and off the job. Not surprisingly, in a culture with both money and leisure time, the entertainment business is booming. The screen, of course, is ever-presentfrom movies to tv to pcs. But it's not just the screen that turns us onor gets turned on. Fewer people read newspapers, but millions tune in to talk radio. Schoolkids carry Gameboys and pagers. On weekends, Rollerbladers strap on Walkmans and head to the park. Pick your pleasure.
