Questions for Alastair Curtis, design director at Nokia

Posted by: Reena Jana on November 18, 2008

Following in the tradition of my colleague Helen Walters, I’m asking you for questions to pose to Alastair Curtis, Nokia’s design director. He’ll be in New York November 19. Nokia recently announced that it cut its sales forecast. What are its plans to help boost sales? How will the slowdown affect its research and development processes? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

How does design fit into the strategy development process at Nokia and how are those linkages made explicit?

Will Nokia pursue a tighter integration of devices and services? If so, what services does he see that impacting the most?

What steps are being taken to unify the overall experience of Nokia phones ? With Nokia there are many names Ovi, Comes with Music etc etc... which is unlike the others. Is there any plan to unify this ?

Also is there any different experience plan for markets such as India which are growing fast and where Nokia has a significant presence.

Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo has declared that he'd like the company to work "more like an internet company" than a traditional manufacturer. How has that translated into opportunities and challenges for Nokia Design? Is your leadership and staff shifting away from industrial designers to include more people with deep internet and media experience?
