For my sins, I’m the author of not one, not two but three books on T-shirt graphics. What can I say? I enjoyed an extended adolescence. But you know when knowing a thing or two about T-shirts comes in handy? When your boss wants to get a T-shirt made.
John Byrne approached me a couple of days ago with a fairly simple task. Earlier in the year, he launched a campaign to become the business site with the deepest and most meaningful engagement of its readers. The first initiative was called “In Your Face.” The idea was simple: for years we’ve allowed readers to comment on our stories but now we wanted to prominently highlight those insights. “In Your Face” calls attention to the most substantive comments left on our site by our readers. To date, the feature has been a huge success, resulting in new records of reader engagement throughout the year: more than a doubling of the number of comments and a tripling of the traffic to those discussions.
John also promised that BusinessWeek would give specially designed T-shirts to 100 readers who have elevated the discussion on BW.com through their smart and well-written perspectives. Now it’s time to make the shirts. So I asked an amazingly talented friend of mine, Barbara Reyes, to come up with some suggestions. As art directors and designers seem wont to do, she came up with way too many great ideas.
So in the spirit of continued collaboration, John set up a poll to canvas your opinion. Here are the three designs in the running, and below is the poll that John created.
