The International Contemporary Furniture Fair juggernaut swept through the city at the weekend. Perhaps the best thing about ICFF is that it’s not just the official event at the Javits Center that’s noteworthy. Seems like if you threw a brick you’d hit some design activity or another: There were little, interesting things going all over town. For instance, famed minimalist, Naoto Fukasawa, about whom we’ve written before, and designer Jasper Morrison, had put together an exhibition of — beautiful — everyday objects at the Vitra store in the Meatpacking District. I’ve been mulling the questions they posted as the central thesis of the show ever since:
Why do so many designs fail to pass the everyday test? Why is Normal disappearing, and when it’s gone how do we replace it? Is beauty just a question of looks, or could there be more to it than meets the eye? What makes a good object, and how come some objects get better with time?
What comes next? The Bloomberg Businessweek Innovation and Design blog chronicles new tools for creativity and collaboration, innovation case studies in both the corporate and social sectors, and the new ideas that have the power to change the way things have always been done.
