The deal puts the popular casual gaming site Shockwave.com under the MTV umbrella, along with AddictingGames.com. Two film and video outlets are also included in the deal, in the form of AtomFilms.com and AddictingClips.com.

The acquisition of Atom is MTV's latest move in a string of buys. MTV recently bought Xfire, Y2M, GameTrailers.com, IFILM and Neopets.

MTV and parent company Viacom said that the deal is in line with the companies' digital strategy, as they look to expand their reach across many facets of entertainment.

John Welch, CEO of PlayFirst, one of the top casual game companies, said that the acquisition is a large vote of confidence in the casual space.

"This is great validation of the strength and growth in our industry, and a well-deserved reward for one of our closest partners and one of the leading distributors of casual games," he said. "PlayFirst has expected to see casual games becoming more and more a part of popular culture, which this acquisition validates. We feel that traditional media companies’ best option to effectively compete in our uniquely challenging space is to build on an initial acquisition of a leading company. We expect that the content we are producing will continue to drive category growth through access to more platforms, distributors, and consumers every day.”
