Susan Boyle is Captivating Because She Is Common--In The Best Sense

Posted by: Bruce Nussbaum on April 22, 2009

In case you are one of the few people left on the planet who hasn’t seen the YouTube video of the remarkable singing of Britain’s Susan Boyle, check it out.

Her amazing voice is now cast worldwide, thanks to social media. And so is the prejudice of the audience and elitist jury. And so is the surprise of that audience and jury at Susan’s amazing voice. And finally, so is the acceptance and applause of that audience and jury. A “common” middle-aged woman no one expected to shine, did just that and blew away all pre-conceived notions. Beautiful.

This is a wonderful moment. Indeed, it is a global Spectacle of triumph and warmth that we can share.

Susan Boyle, the icon of our New Normal era?
