Jeff Jarvis on Blogging.

Posted by: Bruce Nussbaum on May 1, 2008

Just came out of a great presentation on blogging by Jeff Jarvis of buzzmachine.com. He was talking to an audience of neophytes and “old” hands and did a great job. If you want someone to talk to your people about how the world of blogging works, Jeff does it incredibly clearly.

Key Jarvis points on blogging:

1- It’s all about community and conversation.

2- Link out = Link in. Links enable conversations.

3- The role of bloggers is to curate a conversation, not dominate it.

4- Have a comment strategy—highlight your commentators and their comments (sorry, I am falling down on this in my own blog).

5- In posting, have a real voice, be brief, be provocative, respond.

Hi Bruce, I don't blame it on you, but particularly points 2 and 4 needs to be reconsidered in the light of the re-design of the BW blogs. In the old version of your blog 'Names' used to link to URLs commenters could optionally leave. This seems to be impossible these days. After all I've indeed noticed regular traffic from your comment section to my blog (and vice versa via trackbacks). These 'conversations' are now gone :-(
