Have You Heard of CIME?

Posted by: Bruce Nussbaum on May 13, 2008

For years, the term “BRIC” was hot on Wall Street—and increasingly in design and innovation circles. BRIC stood for Brazil, Russia, India, China—the fastest growing emerging markets.

Now another term is hot—CIME. CIME stands for China, India, Middle East. Yes, Brazil is still pretty hot and so is Russia. But the Middle East is REALLY hot, with all those petro-trillions pouring in to pay for name-brand architects and designers creating beautiful new things in Dubai, the Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

Good for cocktail chatter.

Purchasing power is one (rather old) way of looking at it, though Dubai is an impressive example -for now - of how to invent your way away from oil.

Things will get even more interesting when the region's oil wells dry up (or are made redundant). My bets are on India and Brazil in the long run. Eventually, people and their ways of sustainably relating to eachother as well as to their environment, will make the difference. China and the ME will be playing catch-up when that time comes around.

The Middle East is impressive but I think Egypt, South Africa and some other African countries can also be key in the future. Consider the way how India and China are investing heavily in the continent.

Just read about an interesting report that seems to have come out on these issues and mostly about the post oil story. Might be worth knowing more about:
