Apple's Innovation Strategy: More Than MacBook Air.

I suffer from product lust as much as any so I was pretty taken with the latest ultra-thin laptop from Apple. There’s plenty of “innovation” in it, much of it taken from the use-interface design and the miniaturization of the iPod and iPhone.

But the real innovation to come out of MacWorld lies in Apple’s business model and its successful ecosystem. Folks who think (and write) that Apple’s success is due to “stylish” products and cool colors miss the point. Innovation integration (or integrative innovation) is at the heart of Apple’s success.

Oh, and that beautiful new Air laptop? Doesn’t come with an optical drive so you can’t plug in CDs or DVDs. You have to download your movies through a wireless connection and lots will soon be available—on iTunes.

I think I like the term “integrated innovation” as it applies to Apple.


The really big news out of MacWorld this week is TV. Yep old media tricked out. Apple came out with a new online movie rental setup through iTunes, made possible with a deal with several big Hollywood studios. This is true innovation. And Steve Jobs integrated that with a second iteration (the first one failed he said) of the Apple TV setop box that allows you to stream a movie rental from iTunes directly into your TV. Paramount, NBC Universal 20th Century Fox, Warner Brothers and Sony have signed up.

Beware the temptation to dim the light of simple joy under a bushel basket of cleverness.
