Jane Jacob's Brilliant Legacy.

I like my cities dense and full of culture and I like my wilderness empty and full of birds (this is migration season and I am a birder). So I mark the passing of Jane Jacobs with deep sadness for she was the first and best spokesperson for cities and city living that I know of. Had we listened to her, we wouldn’t be having this kind of energy crisis. We wouldn’t be turning forests and deserts into tract-housing or chopping up and messing up our mountains and mesas. We wouldn’t be taking away the land we love for fishing and hunting and turning it into “development.” We wouldn’t be drilling holes in the most beautiful canyons of the West. We wouldn’t be sprawling everywhere in big McMansions driving long distances in SUVs sucking up gas and energy.

Metropolis magazine, one of our partners on the Innovation & Design channel, has a wonderful article on Jane Jacobs and what she stood for. Metroplis is a gem. It has some of the best coverage of architecture, urban planning, and design anywhere. It you read The New Yorker, you should be reading Metropolis. Heck, if you read Field & Stream and buy at Cabela’s, you should be reading Metropolis.

We still don't listen to her -- especially not in developing countries, where most of the "urban development" and land cover changes are happening.
