Infosys Makes The Top Innovators List for Asia-Pacific.

It was fascinating to see Infosys come out as # 10 on the Asia regional list for The World’s Most Innovative Companies. Sony was # 14. Samsung was #4. Apple, Google and 3 M took the first three slots.

Here’s what senior execs had to say about why they voted for Infosys:

For having raised to a mammoth company in a short -period.

Infosys is one of the leading IT firms and its one of the best firms to work with as per the surveys…apparently, they have the best HR practices for the employees….they even have boating and saloon facilities in their campus so that employees can relax and can take break in their hectic schedules.

It has develeped the one of the best busness model & organisation hierarchy.

Technology edge and best professionalism
They have the highest recall when it comes to outsourcing and has leaders that are respected in the world.

I am surprised to see that they have made it to the Innovators list, because they are not innovators in the sense of an Apple or a Google; their innovations are more from a business model, process and operating model perspective - things which are not easily evident.

Small Correction: Infosys has been around for 25 years
since early 80s. They did have long haul.

However, Infosys did several things in short haul
since mid-1990s that no other Indian company have
done on a significant scale:

1-It showed that knowledge can be valuable, leverageable
and can be encashed diligently.

2-It respected investment and showed that it is OK to share
the profit in a clean way without any accounting gimmicks.

3-It paved the way and gave direction for the middle-class
who went through several cycles of regional-self-discovery
through various businesses & careers (like working for public
sector in 60s & 70s, banking & medicine in 80s, experimented
with leather-garment-granite industries in 90s. Software
was also one of the experiments locals tried in 80s & 90s).

4-Infosys intelligently leveraged political opening of
mid-90s in the form of 'liberalization'.

5-They built something: Infosys as a brand and put Bangalore
on the world map.

6-Created millionaires out of normal public that no Indian
company had done before.

Most of they brought respect to the middle-class and made
knowledge sexy!

If one looks carefully, Infosys did innovate.
Let me explain:

* A look at these companies shows broad focus
and innovation

COMPANY TYPE OF INNOVATION
===========================================
Apple Product, R&D & Marketing
NOKIA Technology Products
P&G Diverse Products
Google Search Algorithm based Product
NIKE Product
Starbucks Marketing & service

These companies have know-how (or technology)
developed out of research & market exposure.

* Let us look at Infosys:

They are not exposed to market directly
whereas their customers are. So, what Infosys
does is to innovate on "knowledge" (v/s
know-how above).

Though software services companies existed
along with Infosys, the key difference is
building right skill and talent to deliver
is what Infosys highlights.

Infosys may not realize this fact though:
That knowledge is an invaluable and dominant
part or factor of the whole. That software
is a vehicle to enable this. Infosys played
a pivotal role in shining light on this
aspect.
