Kevin Martin: Um, About That Political Savviness . . .
Posted by: Jon Fine on November 15, 2007
Where I saw some political savvy on the part of FCC Chairman Kevin Martin’s recent moves, Portfolio’s Jeff Bercovici only saw tone-deafedness. To steal a phrase from Mickey Kaus, he may be right. The Wall Street Journal today has an article detailing how ticked off cable operators are by the idea of additional FCC regulation, and buried within it is this telling little nugget:
Mr. Martin was on vacation and unavailable to comment, a spokeswoman said.
So the Chairman of the FCC comes out with two of the biggest policy prescriptions in his tenure—and then goes on vacation.
Or disappears beneath his desk and goes fetal.
Neither of which strikes me as the smartest thing to do right now.
