Two questions about the saga that’s obsessing me—er, I mean, those in the blogosphere and also in the mainstream press:
1. Lonelygirl15’s videos have been viewed 1.4 million times, as of, oh, right about now. If lonelygirl15’s videos are pro jobs made by actors (or even grad students), why hasn’t anyone recognized them?
2. For that matter, if they aren’t made by actors and are the handiwork of two talented high schoolers—well, OK, Bree’s homeschooled. But why hasn’t anyone recognized Daniel?
3. In a similar vein: Did anyone spot the actors/actresses of Blair Witch Project when that was just a bizarre sub-rosa campaign percolating through the Web in the months preceding the movie’s release?
Thoughts?
clearly your criteria for recognition has not kept up with the times.
I put your link on my blogroll thinking that your point of view would be important to my very serious business-minded readers. Yesterday, I checked out your blog, expecting to see Fine talking about the media and Katrina: One Year Later or Fine talking about the media and the Middle East or at least, Fine and the Media on Global Warming. But no, you're ranting on and on for paragraphs about youtube's Lonelygirl15. So she is made up, so she is a performer and her soap opera life is fabricated and she may get a Hollywood contract. So one of my very best and smartest friends, currently enrolled in the Haas School of Business MBA program at UC Berkeley, has watched all the Lonelygirl15 videos and maybe showed me a few too. So over 1.4 million people can't take their eyes off of her. So she informs us about lazy eye. There's got to be better, more world peace kinds of stuff for you to talk about. Or maybe, this phenomenon is the Wag the Dog tip of the new media tipping point. Where people don't mind being duped and in fact kind of like it.
Blogosphere and mainstream press are two hard strong and powerfull concepts, isn´t it?
I always think that everybody should treat carefully the prees even online press, otherwise you could fall in a huge problem.

does it really matter if LonelyGirl15 is real or not? can't her videos just be something entertaining to watch while you have some downtime? when i stumbled on to her while nosing around through YouTube, i was sucked into her story from the first blog she posted. with a medium like the internet and YouTube, why can't some unknown homeschooled girl become a celebrity? i believe it can happen and i can't wait for the next episode in the Bree/Daniel saga.
For what it's worth "Jane Jones" is the true name of the character Alice Ayers (played by Natalie Portman) in Closer. This was the character, who on the surface appeared to be the most honest throughout the film, only to be revealed -- ironically, in the end -- as the most false persona.
The media, entertainment and marketing worlds continue to shapeshift on a near-daily basis, as new forms arise and old assumptions erode. Where is it all going? No one really knows. But on this blog BusinessWeek’s media writers Tom Lowry and Ron Grover promise to provide ample helpings of scoop, provocation, and sharp analysis as they track and annotate this constantly changing terrain.
