Blogging and Language

Posted by: Jon Fine on May 3, 2006

Currently attending AlwaysOn’s OnHollywood conference, where Technorati EVP Peter Hirschberg last night said that English is not blogging’s native tongue.

According to a Technorati study of blog postings by language, 41% of blog posts are in Japanese, 28% are in English, and 14% are in Chinese.

The stat (obviously) grabbed my attention, but now I’m trying to wonder if it surprises me or not. What do you guys think?

Those clever, tech-obsessed Japanese are always early adopters. Stands to reason that English isn't first. More and more people may have a grasp on the de facto language of business (English) but people generally blog in their native tongue, not a second language. Look for the Chinese figure to rise unless the good folks at Yahoo and Google start turning too many Chinese bloggers into the authorities.

That's not a huge surprise, but where's "German" on that list? I would have expected that.

Peter flashed the slide very quickly--I only jotted down the top three languages. I bet, though, that if you hunt around a bit on technorati you can dig up where German came in.

I'd say that 99% of blogs are written in Gibberish.

I'm suprised English isn't more widely used.

Chinese is very popular now.

I'm surprised that hindi didn't make the cut, although there might have been too much dialecting to quantify it correctly. As big as the net is getting in the asian Big Two, I was surprised to see english so high.
