Guess? (GES)
It began with a pair of designer jeans sold to Bloomingdale's in 1981. Since then brothers Paul and Maurice Marciano have built Guess? Inc. into one of the fashion industry's more-enduring success stories. Their signature slutty look never seems to go out of style, supported as it as by a runway full of scandal-plagued models such as Anna Nicole Smith and Paris Hilton. Guess saw its earnings shoot from $7 million to $58 million over the past two years, on a 50% rise in sales to $936 million. The Marcianos continue to open Guess retail stores and recently have benefited from a major expansion in Europe. Much like their models, the Marcianos are never far from controversy, however. The company had to delay its first-quarter earnings announcement while the Securities and Exchange Commission examined statements made in an earlier filing.
